XBOSoft Software & Web Application Usability Testing Methodology

At XBOSoft our usability testing methodology focuses on preparation, set up and carefully measuring how an application is used. The main objective is discovering usage habits in order to determine user satisfaction. Our key steps are:
1) Identify the critical tasks that users should be able to complete quickly with the web site, web application or software.
2) Identify variables to be measured. Generally, test subjects are observed how well they respond in four areas: efficiency, accuracy, recall and emotional response. Data could include such items as:

  1. How much time and how many steps (clicks or other input) were required for people to complete basic tasks?
  2. Which step took the longest and least amount of time?
  3. How many mistakes did people make and where, with what frequency and probability?
  4. How does the person feel about the tasks completed?
  5. Would the user recommend this system to a friend?
3) Develop test instruments such as scripted instructions, paper prototypes, and pre- and post-test questionnaires that may be used to gather feedback on the product being tested.
4) Perform an expert usability review to identify and fix any big items that might impact users in an actual test.
5) Set up testing room with recording equipment, hardware for product testing.
6) Identify testing team (5-10 users) and carry out the usability testing.
7) The results of the first tests are treated as a baseline or control measurement; all subsequent tests can then be compared to the baseline to indicate improvement.
